Best way to send money to Nepal from the USA: $500 delivered between 73,319 and 75,830 rupees on 28 October 2026

If you live in the United States and support family in Nepal, the provider you choose and how you pay decide how many rupees actually arrive. On the same day, the same $500 delivered anywhere from about 73,300 to 75,800 rupees, depending only on which app was used. This guide compares the main options, shows where the hidden costs are, and explains the rules on both sides.

Quick answer

  • The cheapest way is a licensed money transfer app, paid from your US bank account or debit card, sending to a Nepali bank account.
  • On 28 October 2026, Remitly gave the most rupees on a $500 bank transfer: 75,830 NPR with no fee. Instarem (75,444) and Western Union (75,222) were close behind. Wise (74,160) and Xoom (73,319) delivered less.
  • The exchange rate matters more than the fee. Most "$0 fee" apps make their money on the rate, so compare the rupees received, not the fee.
  • Don't pay by credit card or cash. Credit cards add large fees, and since 1 January 2026 the US charges a 1% tax on transfers paid in cash or by money order.
  • Never use hundi. It's illegal in Nepal and can mean losing the money, a fine of up to three times the amount and up to three years in jail.
Bar chart of the total cost to send $500 from the USA to Nepal on 28 October 2026: Remitly $2.30, Instarem $4.83, Western Union $6.29, Wise $13.26, Xoom $18.78

Fees and rates compared: $500 to a Nepali bank account

To compare fairly, we measured every quote against the mid-market exchange rate, the rate banks trade at with each other. At 14:43 UTC on 28 October 2026 it was 152.36 NPR per US dollar, so a perfect, cost-free transfer of $500 would deliver 76,180 NPR. Nepal Rastra Bank's official rate that day was 151.89 (buying) and 152.49 (selling).

ProviderFeeExchange rateFamily receivesTotal cost
Remitly (standard rate)$0151.6675,830 NPR$2.30 (0.46%)
Instarem$0150.8975,444 NPR$4.83 (0.97%)
Western Union$1.99151.0575,222 NPR$6.29 (1.26%)
Wise$13.26152.36 (no markup)74,160 NPR$13.26 (2.65%)
Xoom (PayPal)$4.99148.1273,319 NPR$18.78 (3.76%)

Total cost = the fee plus the money lost on the exchange rate, compared with the mid-market rate. Quotes were for a bank deposit paid from a US bank account, collected between 13:22 and 14:44 UTC on 28 October 2026 (Xoom's quote was from earlier that day). Wise's own quote showed a $13.26 fee; its public comparison table showed $8.05 (74,954 NPR), so your fee may vary.

What the table tells you

  • The difference is in the exchange rate. Wise is the only provider that uses the real mid-market rate and charges a visible fee. Everyone else shows a small or zero fee and adds a margin to the rate. Every 1% of markup on $500 costs your family about 760 rupees.
  • Remitly's first-transfer offer is better still: new customers got 152.20 on their first $1,000 (76,100 NPR on $500). That's a one-time deal, so judge Remitly by its normal rate.
  • Remitly's rate may be lower if you pay by debit card rather than from your bank account. Check both options in the app before you send.
  • Quick test for any quote: if the rate is above Nepal Rastra Bank's buying rate (151.89 on 28 October), you're getting a better deal than a bank in Nepal would give. Check today's rate with our dollar to NPR converter.

Other providers

MoneyGram, Ria, Taptap Send and WorldRemit also send from the US to Nepal, but we couldn't get verified quotes from them on the same day, so they're not in the table. Taptap Send's published fee is $1.99 for transfers under $500 and free from $500. Get a live quote from each before you decide.

Does the amount you send change the winner?

Yes. Flat fees hurt small transfers most. On 28 October 2026:

Provider$200$500$1,000
Remitly (standard)1.45%0.46%0.46%
Instarem0.99%0.97%0.96%
Western Union1.85%1.26%1.06%
Wise (comparison-table fee)2.14%1.61%1.43%
Xoom5.21%3.76%3.27%

For $200, Instarem came out cheapest because Remitly charged a $1.99 fee at that size. From $500 up, Remitly's fee was $0 and it led clearly. If your family's needs allow it, one larger transfer a month usually beats several small ones.

How you pay matters as much as who you choose

  • Bank account (ACH) or debit card: the cheapest way to pay.
  • Credit card: on the same $500 Wise transfer, paying by credit card raised the fee to as much as $38.82, so the family received about 70,500 NPR instead of 74,160. Your card issuer may also treat it as a cash advance and charge extra fees and interest.
  • Cash, money order or cashier's check: since 1 January 2026, a 1% US federal excise tax applies to remittances paid this way. On $500 that's an extra $5. Transfers paid from a US bank account or a US debit or credit card are exempt.

Bank, wallet or cash pickup?

XoomYes (Nabil, Everest, Nepal Investment Bank and others)YesYes, for small amounts
Taptap SendYesYes (City Express, IME)Khalti, IME Pay, Prabhu Pay
WiseYes, personal accounts onlyNoNo
  • Bank account: best for larger amounts. Wise says transfers reach banks with real-time payments in about 15 minutes and others within up to two working days.
  • Mobile wallet (eSewa, Khalti, Prabhu Pay): fast and handy for small, regular support. Under Nepal Rastra Bank rules, a wallet can't hold more than Rs 50,000 overnight, so it's not the place for big sums.
  • Cash pickup: useful when the recipient has no bank account. Cash is usually ready within minutes at agents such as IME and City Express.

Sending limits

  • Wise: up to NPR 1,000,000 per transfer and NPR 2,000,000 per day, to personal bank accounts only. Wise can't send NPR to business accounts in Nepal.
  • Xoom: cash pickup is capped at NPR 200,000 per transfer.
  • Western Union: shows up to $5,000 per online transaction.
  • Remitly and Taptap Send: limits depend on how fully you've verified your identity. Larger amounts need more ID.

Rules in Nepal

  • Use licensed channels only. Money must reach Nepal through banks and remittance companies licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank. All the apps above pay out through licensed partners.
  • Hundi is illegal. Under the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act, people caught using hundi can lose the money, be fined up to three times the amount and be jailed for up to three years. Police in Kathmandu arrested hundi traders with Rs 1.16 crore in cash in March 2026. With the best legal apps costing well under 1% on a $500 transfer, hundi isn't worth the risk.
  • No tax on receiving money from family. We found no Nepali tax on personal remittances a family receives. Interest earned on the money in a bank is taxed separately, as usual.
  • Remittance savings accounts. Several Nepali banks pay extra interest on deposits from remittance, but these usually target Nepalis in foreign employment. Ask the bank whether money from a US-based family member qualifies, and never falsely declare ordinary money as remittance.

Rules in the United States

  • Gift tax: file above $19,000, but you almost certainly won't pay. In 2026 you can give up to $19,000 per person per year without filing anything. Above that, you file IRS Form 709, but no tax is due until your lifetime gifts pass $15 million. For example, sending your mother $25,000 in 2026 means filing Form 709 for the $6,000 above the limit and paying nothing. Your family in Nepal owes no US tax on gifts.
  • The 1% remittance tax only applies to transfers paid with cash, money orders or cashier's checks, as above.
  • Providers keep records of transfers of $3,000 or more. That's a normal anti-money-laundering rule, not a tax on you. Never split cash deposits to avoid bank reporting; that's illegal even when the money is clean.
  • If you also hold a bank account in Nepal (including a joint account with your parents), you may need to file an FBAR if your foreign accounts together exceed $10,000 at any point in the year.
Five ways to get your family in Nepal more rupees: compare rupees received, pay from bank or debit card, send fewer larger transfers, use first-transfer offers knowingly, use a bank for big amounts and a wallet for small
Five habits that put more rupees in your family's hands.

Five ways to get your family more rupees

  1. Compare the rupees received, not the fee. Put the same amount into two or three apps and pick the one that delivers the most NPR.
  2. Pay from your bank account or debit card. Avoid credit cards and cash.
  3. Send fewer, larger transfers. On 28 October, $200 transfers cost up to 5.2%, while $500 transfers cost up to 3.8%.
  4. Use first-transfer offers, but don't stay for them. After the promo, check whether another app now gives more.
  5. Match the payout to the amount. Bank account for larger sums, wallet for small regular support, cash pickup if there's no bank account. Keep your receipts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send money to Nepal from the USA?

On 28 October 2026, Remitly at its standard rate delivered the most rupees on a $500 bank deposit (75,830 NPR, with no fee). Rates change daily, so compare live quotes, pay from a bank account or debit card, and send to a Nepali bank account.

Is it better to use Wise or Remitly to send money to Nepal?

On our test day, Remitly delivered more on $500 because Wise's fee was larger than Remitly's exchange-rate margin. Wise is fully transparent and uses the real mid-market rate, but it only pays into personal bank accounts in Nepal and has no cash pickup or wallet option.

Can I send money directly to eSewa or Khalti from the USA?

Yes. Remitly, Western Union and Taptap Send pay out to Nepali wallets such as eSewa, Khalti and Prabhu Pay. Wallets can't hold more than Rs 50,000 overnight, so use a bank account for larger amounts.

How long does it take for money to reach Nepal?

Wallet and cash pickup transfers usually arrive within minutes. Bank deposits take from about 15 minutes to two working days, depending on the bank.

Do I have to pay tax to send money to my family in Nepal?

Usually not. You only file a gift tax return (Form 709) if you give one person more than $19,000 in 2026, and tax is due only after $15 million in lifetime gifts. The 1% US remittance tax applies only if you pay in cash, by money order or by cashier's check.

No. Hundi is illegal in Nepal, and offenders can lose the money, pay a fine of up to three times the amount and face up to three years in jail.
